My love of playing cards found stitched into 18th century documents is constant and true.
Lately I've been finding half cards, torn in two by some thrifty soul who did not waste a scrap.
I keep hoping to find a match and be able to reunite two halves, but no luck.
This one is my favourite find.
The dark hearts.
The stab wounds from Cupid's arrow, obviously dull, though his aim was true.
The facts and figures, written on both sides.
The cost of love.

p.s. answers to a few questions ...
The Porte de Cimetière is an untouched photograph (apart from the black border), not a painting. It is the doorway to a family mausoleum in the south of France. The date above the doorway is 1904.
The dangly legs can be viewed in full right here. The piece is just over 21" x 30" and occupies a little slice of wall not much larger.
Cabinet cards are listed on Etsy, both as originals and as instant downloads for you to alter to your heart's content.

Le Combat
French military school notebook from 1926, belonging to student Jean Avril.
The notebook has cardboard covers with a cloth spine. 60 gridded pages written front and back in neat script. Writing is blue on the first 20 or so pages, and dark sepia on the remainder. Numerous handmade pockets hold mimeographed handouts and notes. At least 17 hand drawn diagrams and maps.
Notebook measures approximately 6.75" x 9" x 1".

Little odds and ends of antique lace, carefully pinned to scraps of cardboard.
These used to sell for a handful of centimes at the brocante, yet I only chose a few.
I remember the day.
The market.
The town.
As much as the treasure itself, It's the postcard in my heart that I cling to.
Stories of sadness and joy.
Of longing.
It's been too long.
A few new French perfume labels on Etsy. These are singles and once they're gone, they're gone.
The question is, who would choose to smell like a jockey club?!?
