Road Kill
Road kill is not for the faint of heart.
It involves stench and maggots and stringy bits.
It requires gloves and bleach. A scrub brush and a strong stomach.
It is a reminder of the frailty and impermanence of life.
Of dashed hopes. Of promises unfulfilled.
Earth to earth.
Ashes to ashes.
Dust to dust.

Bedraggled
The rain is sluicing down and we are soaked to the skin.
Our woolen bathing suits are sodden and stretched and clinging in all the wrong places.
Our mustachios are bedraggled.
We fear that stripes are not flattering.
But no one will say it aloud.

Tooth Fairies
Tooth fairies are always women, you know. The role is passed from mother to youngest daughter, and is a calling rather than a mere job or obligation. Tooth fairies are currently endangered in North America due to the high mercury content in the teeth they are handling. Some deaths have occured months or even years before the daughters were sufficiently prepared to assume their mothers' responsibilities. In days gone by tooth fairies were much sought after due to their own high protein and calcium content. They generally work at night to minimize risk and interference. Occasional sightings have been reported between the hours of 0900 and 1500 in the vicinity of elementary school playgrounds.
